director who's going to be the next cia director. the president's going to have a full plate of nominations to put forward. what did he say about susan rice today? >> reporter: he was asked his thoughts on ambassador rice, currently the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. i'll let you listen to his remarks then we can talk about it. this is the president. >> susan rice is extraordinary. couldn't be prouder of the job she's done. [ applause ] >> reporter: so from the whole cabinet. little awkward hard to tell if the applause were necessarily for susan rice or right before he said that he had also called out secretary napolitano and the veterans affairs department saying it's their birthday. perhaps they were also applauding the birthdays. but i'm told the fact that susan rice is up on the hill should not necessarily be read as an early sign that the white house is giving her sort of a prerun dry run for a nomination. at this is in part because she wanted to go answer questions on the hill to clear her name and that this was part of her desire

it's clear there was some cia activity there. what exactly it was and what the cia's told involvement was, why there was a consulate there, wasn't even a consulate, didn't do normal consulate duties. what was it all about? by won't know until the investigation is completed and released. >> senator ayotte said when you're an ambassador to the united nations -- i want to get your thoughts on this. she said, look, you go well beyond unclassified talking points in your daily preparation responsibilities. i guess the implication being that she would have been aware of other things that were different or contradicted directly to what she went and said on television. does this cast any doubt on her story? general clark has made what i've heard from everybody who knows her that she is an incredibly honest and forthright person. >> well, i think there's a bigger question here, erin, and that's the credibility of the administration on these national security issues and whether they politicized a national security issue that led to the deat

if she had gone ahead, sir, and said the cia -- and revealed al qaeda, right? the change in the script essentially, the talking points. don't say al qaeda, say extremists. if she had gone ahead and said i know some classified information, let's say al qaeda, wouldn't that have been even more devastating? wouldn't that have been a bigger problem? wouldn't they be after her for that today? >> well, the truth is always what should be told. the truth and the knowledge of the truth is what everybody should represent, regardless of the consequences of doing it. >> so i guess i don't hear the same calls for the head of someone. i don't hear the same frustration with the cia, which has said that they were the ones who wrote the talking points. i don't hear the same frustration even with the president who said the buck stops with him. i don't hear the same frustration with hillary clinton. will you, in fact -- or even general petraeus, now that this scandal has cost him -- another scandal has cost him his job. it all seems to be falling in the lap of the ambassador of t

now she also said that the cia and the cia has come out publicly and said that the cia took those classified points out about the al qaeda attack. so what ambassador rice was really left with was all this information about the spontaneous attack and nothing about those terrorist elements. let me read to you a little bit of what ambassador rice issued in a statement yesterday. she said we explained that the talking points provided by the intelligence community, the initial assessment upon which they were based, were uncorrect in one key respect, there was no protest or demonstration in benghazi. while we concernly wish that we had perfect information just days off the terrorist attack, as is often the case, the intelligence assessment has evolved. so certainly the senators are saying we have more questions than answers. but they're also saying, in a position such as secretary of state, which we all know that ambassador rice is the leading contender for at this point, given the vociferous defense by the white house, in a job such as secretary of state, you really have to ask the tough question

it was the acting cia director michael murrell who went with her to this meeting with the three republican senators, told them that it was actually the fbi that changed the unclassified talking points that susan rice used and then really made them mad about that. then hours later called back and said, never mind. we were wrong. so they didn't even -- he didn't even have his facts right in that meeting, which really adds fuel to the fire here. >> okay. and not picking on susan rice but i have to lay this by you. i mean, isn't it part rice's personality the editor at large of foreign policy magazine describes rice this way, quote, she's not easy. i'm not sure i'd want to take her on a picnic with my family, but if the president wants her to be secretary of state, she'll work hard. this is from a reuters article. so is it in part that senators aren't used to dealing with a person -- i mean, susan rice just comes out and kind of says things. she's blunt. she's not charming, warm, etcetera. >> or maybe some might say diplomatic which you need for the role of secretary of state. you know, that m
